Beginning Concept Ideas

I know I want to do a companion type creature. Like how Rapunzel had that chameleon in Tangled. I started off with more mount type creatures but I decided quickly it's not the route I want to take. I'm really liking the fox-ferret thing on my first page. I might experiment a bit more before starting and getting the comp sketch done tomorrow.

  1. There are some good ideas here. I would try to explore a few more possibilities and then pull up some photos of relevant animals (foxes, ferrets, raccoons, etc.), and sketch some studies of them. Then keep both your rough sketches and your studies from nature in front of you while you develop your comp sketches. Pay close attention to the anatomy, especially in the legs, feet & head, and try to let your shapes express aspects of that anatomy even if you are stylizing or simplifying it. Check out Justin Gerard's excellent post describing & demonstrating this very process at Muddy Colors. Notice how great his results are because he took the time to do the studies of the warthogs: http://muddycolors.blogspot.com/2011/12/lets-draw-warthogs.html
